[BNM] [OT] Sunny Pubs in Brighton

Just for clarity - the Farm's not an accreditation system, it's a bunch
of freelancers meeting up regularly. The only limitations are - you have
to turn up to a few meetings and be freelance/self employed before
you're invited on to the mailing list and to have a profile on the site
(only about a quarter to a third of people on the list have a profile
which is down to personal preference/marketing laziness, not rejection.)
Admittedly, this does self regulate in some ways because you have to
have some confidence in your own levels of competence before you're
willing to go and meet a bunch of fellow professionals and say "I do
this." [1]

The FreelanceAdvisor.co.uk site is looking to have a system doing what
you want, but as I understand it they're still developing exactly what
they want out of it after an earlier beta version. If anyone's really
interested in this happening, I suggest talking to them to pool
resources (best person as an initial contact is probably Michael Rose,
who posts here sometimes) as you'll be able to give each other a leg up.

To be honest, I don't really see the point of having freelancers on a
map apart from for statistical reasons. I can see the point in knowing
if someone is in the same town / county / country as you, but I don't
see how knowing if they're a couple of streets away is going to make any
difference to deciding to collaborate or hire someone. I'd expect that
to be a question of skills & experience.

Cheers

Paul
[1] There are of course problems with this, which is that there are some
bloody brilliant designers and developers out there without high enough
confidence to come and chat about what they do. On the flip side, if
they can't come and talk to some peers about what they do, they're going
to find freelancing difficult anyway due to the client contact side of
the work and may be better off as either contractors (somewhat the same
problem as with freelancing) or in full time work. Anyway, I'll shut up
now before this becomes even more of a digression.
