I've had this a few times in the past. Do you mean where the windows XP set-up is the blue screen and it's copying files and things like ntloader fails.
For me each time this was dodgy RAM. If you've got a few sticks of ram try taking one out and installing. Or get a memtest type programme. I think the linux rescue disks have memtest stuff.
Swapping out and replacing RAM solved this for me but it could be the hard disk. Would, as a test??, partitioning it and using another partition work, just to see if it's a dodgy bit of disk??
