[BNM] [OT] Barcelona Recommendations

Since you did so brilliantly with the recommendations for good value
restaurants in London I thought I'd see what you can come up with for
Barcelona.
I'm going for a short visit with my 11 year old son and am looking for:

1.  Reasonably priced room with ensuite, easily accessible by public
transport, in an area we'll feel comfortable returning to at night.

2. Good value/cheap restaurants/cafes.

3. Things to see/do that are less obvious than those we'll find in the
guides or, are unmissable!

4. Any other handy advice/tips.
