[BNM] Upgrading Mysql Master.... Will it break replication?

Hi there...

I want to update my replicated mysql cluster from 5.0.22 to
5.0.44...... I upgraded the slaves first, however I was a bit upset to
discover that this broke replication as the local relay binary log was
not compatible (could not be opened according to the log). To fix I
simply deleted the relay logs as this causes the
slave to get the data again from the masters binary log.

However, this begs the question, if I update mysql on the master
machine, will it screw up its binary logs causing replication to stop?
If there anyway to upgrade without needing to copy the database
across?
