Hi... Yes, French trains a brill...
I dont have knowledge of the Avignon area, but last in a trip in the
area of Carcassonne, Montpellier etc... I stayed a few times with this
chain of self catering apartments:

Bloody brilliant! You normally get a room that can sleep a small
family (other sizes available I guess) with a little kitchenette and
dining area etc... They normally have an outside space where you can
eat dinner.... Rates are by the night or week. If you pay by the week
its alot cheaper but they only clean your room once a week (appartment
package instead of hotel package). Very agreeable and cheap! Its not
camping of course, but if you fancy something a little more
comfortable! They are everywhere too...
