Hi David,
The worries about the frame appear to be in old reviews - e.g. http://www.mtbr.com/cat/older-categories-bikes/bike/voodoo/cycles-d-jab/PRD_349510_91crx.aspx - the grumbles are in 1997/8 reviews.
BikeRadar rate it (FWIW), with comments about why it's so 'cheap' here: http://www.bikeradar.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=15340478
Meanwhile, if you're looking for a hooligan hard-tail (I presume you are if you're going for something with a long fork) then the Orange P7 is a steel classic. The £1k version has a more basic drivetrain, can't comment on quality, but I'd consider the Fox Vanilla upgrade.
My old bike was a short-travel P7, and I loved it.
As always, at that price try before buy! If you can get yr hands on a demo bike for a day, even better.
Good hunting,
Neil Pattinson

Lo list BNM MTB'rs
I'm in the market for a £1000 mountain bike and was curiouse to what
others consider/have bought that are worth a look at/ staying away
from.
Looked in Bike Hut and they do a rather lovely DJab Voodoo in a huge
20" frame so probably a bit big for me (I'm 6'1") I ahve also read
rather worrying reports on their frames too.
Any thoughts..
D
