I would imagine it was people hitting reply then clearing out the body  
& subject of the mail.
If you look at the headers of the mail you just sent you'll see:
	In-Reply-To: 	<006c01ca0c40$e3e70990$abb51cb0$@co.uk>
	References: 	<3f4b489c0907231533o3e1c96esb10b8ffbbffaa61f at mail.gmail.com

Which some mail clients will pick up and use to join threads together.
