It is extremely hard, if not impossible to protect an idea. Copyright
and patents can protect your expression or implementation of that idea.
You can write the idea down and the document is protected by copyright.
You could take the document to a solicitor (or possibly a magistrate's
clerk) and get the document notarised to prove the date.
However it's not really possible to protect an idea, unless you've got a
large house full of cash - because that is what it would probably take
to protect your idea in court.
There's lots of ideas in the world; few are truly unique and in anycase
it's implementing the idea where the hard work is.
