[BNM] [OT] Intrusive Home Office Requirements

Just got this from my employer and wondering if anyone else is being  
asked for similar:

"To comply with Home Office rules on employee records, we are updating  
our employment records for everyone on the payroll. Please could you  
give me a photocopy of the personal details page of your passport and  
any visas."

It could be because we've got a few staff members from recent EU  
accession states and the company is just trying to be fair in making  
everyone comply, but I'm uncomfortable with it. And to be fair to the  
boss, the email did have the same subject line as this (apart from  
[OT] obviously). The email finished with the slightly sinister phrase  
"There may be more requests of this sort."
