Thanks Steve,
I tried this - it opened IE, told me all addons were disabled, and then IE
worked.
But, I closed IE and opened it again and the same problem.
I forgot to say that Firefox and other browsers work perfectly.
I have done a full virus scan with various bits of software, and I don't
have a firewall running on this machine.
I have checked my IE network settings and don't have any proxy setup, nor am
I automatically detecting settings.
It's a strange problem because sometimes IE will work perfectly, and other
times nothing. The times it doesn't work, there is no TCP traffic coming
out of IE at all. I checked with Ethereal.
I have Googled this and others have had the same problem, but I am yet to
find a solution.
I'm loathed to do a complete XP reinstall, as not only would that be a
complete pain, the problem may well recur.
I'm stumped!
Alan
PS. Bring on Windows 7, where IE will no longer be bundled with the OS!!!

Anyone ever had a problem with IE where when you open the browser, it
doesn't connect to the internet? I sometimes have to attempt to open IE 5
or 6 times before it will finally 'register' that the internet connection is
there and load a page.
It originally started happening with IE7, and I hoped the upgrade to IE8
would have fixed the issue.
I did have IE7Pro installed, but it was working fine with that, then one day
it started giving me this strange behaviour.
I have disabled any and all plugins, but the problem persists.
It's rather annoying as I can't always view HTML emails in Outlook as that
relies on IE being able to access the internet. Sometimes it will work
sometimes it won't.
Is there anything I can do short of reinstalling the whole of XP?
Many thanks.
Alan
