Gosh! I was kind of expecting people to say go for AMD; so now you've got me. As for Ubuntu and AMD; never had a problem. I'm using ubuntu on my amd64 (athlon??? I think); although probably still the 32 bit version. got all that 3d beryl thing to work fine but perhaps not too much gfx processing.

Well that would be me (or us) too. The University has some business apps written in oracle forms which uses jinitiator/jvm. Oracle has previewed forms 11g I think but I don't think the plan is to stay with forms; not my decision really. 

Thanks for all the information now I've got to think again but sounds like I'm not risking too much in trying the intel. I just wanted to hit the 3Ghz mark without spending too much.
