[BNM] US Hosting // US SEO

Hello BNMers,
I am under the impression that if I were to create a duplicate site for 
a client with current a UK based website, to target a particular country 
- in this case the US - then it would be better, for SEO purposes, to 
have that 'mirror' site actually hosted on US soil... correct?
If so, does anyone out there have a particularly reliable and 
cost-effective US hosting company that they could recommend for a small, 
static website?
