[BNM] Google image less buttons

Front end devs..

Do you have an opinion on Gooles image less buttons that they use in Gmail?

Personally I think it very nice if not a bit code heavy

(UX people probably want to take me down the beach and want to stone
me to death).

Arguments for are it looks the same accross all browsers. Just
curiouse if any UX pro's had issue aginst this technique?
