I suspect damaged permissions

download and install Applejack

This is for OSX 10.4 and above

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596

This is for older OSX releases

http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20061113143915229

Instructions:

install the app

reboot mac

hold down Apple S (aftrer chime)

Mac will boot into single user mode (black command prompt screen)

at command line type ' applejack auto'

hit enter

wait for half hour while Applejack runs thru a series of tests and repairs

when its finished, type 'r' and hit enter to reboot into normal OSX mode
