[BNM] Virgin and VPNs

Thanks Matt, Paul, and Simon. Very helpful responses.

Simon - I was going to recommend the Draytek Vigor 2820 to my client to
setup his VPN. I assume that's how you have it setup. Or are you using a
Windows Server behind your router to provide the VPN? Just curious!

Subject: Re: [BNM] Virgin and VPNs

I have both internet and TV from Virgin, with the cable connection being
split inside the home so one connection goes to the modem and one to the set
top box. The modem has an Ethernet port to connect to a router while the set
top box has an Ethernet port for 'engineer use only' iirc.

Virgin sent me out a Netgear WNR2000 wireless router when I upgraded to
50meg, but I've carried on using my Vigor 2820 which works just fine.

One thing I have noticed is that if I connect a computer directly to the
modem I get about 52mbps downstream, but connecting the router (either
Netgear or Vigor) lowers that speed to ~46mbps. Using Devolo dLAN 200s gives
a variable 20-40mbps which I can only assume means I have mice gnawing on my
cables somewhere.

A good tip while setting up Virgin connections for the first time is that if
you're not getting a connection to the router for whatever reason, or it's
not picking up a DHCP addy you need to -

Power off the router -> power down the modem -> disconnect the fibre cable
from the modem -> wait two minutes (really this long) -> reconnect the fibre
-> repower the modem -> wait while it starts up -> repower the router.

This forces the modem to pick up a new IP address from Virgin and cures all
manner of woes.

While I hate to say it, Virgin actually seem to have done something good to
NTL et al. Their customer service has been excellent and the connection
itself has been great. First words of praise for a cable company I've ever
had...

Wonderful! Thanks Simon. Nice to have that confirmed.

The reason I am asking is because a client is moving his office into his
home, and would like to have another employee be able to tap into the
network to pickup files etc.

He doesn't yet have the Virgin line installed, and Virgin have sent him out
a wireless router already.

Do you know if they will also install a modem, so that I can easily replace
their standard router with a more capable box?

He's getting the TV service too, so perhaps they'll just give him a set-top
box and run the broadband connection out of the back of that, into the
router. I'm sure Virgin's optical cable won't be doing directly into the
back of a wireless router...?

Thanks,
Alan

I should have made clear - I'm doing exactly what you've described below
with DynDNS.

No problems that I've encountered.

Ah, cool.

Thanks for your help.

Does anyone else run a PPTP based VPN over Virgin residential?

Hazlitt, is it over a residential or business Virgin line?

Many thanks,
Alan

Hi Alan,

They are using site to site IPsec vpns.

Unfortunately their routers don's support Dynamic-DNS.

Hazlitt,

Is your customer using a residential Virgin line? What type of VPN is
it
exactly? PPTP/ipSec?

I'm not too worried about the IP address, as I can just setup
Dynamic-DNS to
get a hostname to use with the varying IP address. You might want to
look
at that for your customer, if their router supports it.

Hi Alan,

We have a customer who insisted on running a couple of VPNs over Virgin.
The problem with them is that Virgin say they have allocated a static IP
address. But it turns out that this is in fact what they call a 'long
lease' so the customer's IPs change from time to time and we have to go
and reconfigure the routers.

Hi All,

Does anyone know if it's possible to host my own VPN on a Virgin
residential
cable broadband line?

I'm just thinking of a bog-standard PPTP (Port 1723) VPN. i.e. do they
block any incoming VPN ports?

Thanks.
Alan
