as i understand it, it depends who's paying you.

if you are working for a UK company for a short period in the states,  
then fine, you can do the job.

if you are being paid by US company you are liable for taxes, need a  
social security number, etc etc.

i read your email as suggesting you we going to be employed by a US  
company [and i presume paid in dollars] hence the need for a 'proper'  
visa.

obviously, you should take proper advice on this, i'm just speaking as  
someone who travelled and worked extensively in the US over a number  
of years, before a botched green card application got me booted for  
good [as i said before, it's a long story, best told over beer]
