Tell them to go to
www.sussex.ac.uk/pcoffers which has a few discounted macs and pcs. Ask at the helpdesk (engg1) in IT Services. There may be an additional discount for Dells but I'm not sure. Actually these offers are always changing so if they're after a Dell let me know and I'll double check the price for *members* (for staff there is something extra but not sure if it extends to students) of the University. 

I'm not sure these are cheap enough or the right spec. I bought my macbook pro a few years ago which was about the price you pay in shops less VAT; also got apple care free for 3 years or something.

Also check all the prices they can get software for i.e. MS Office for 40 quid. SPSS free in library, adobe flex builder pro free, kaspersky free:
