Many Registrars are well aware of the situation with the drop catchers -
this is one of the reasons they all started conducting their own auctions
past the expiry date and before the drop. (other reason was the ability to
make money of course).

I would check with the current provider (or up the chain from them) and see
if the domain is going to go through their Registrar auction process, you
maybe able to sign up with them and bid for it. This is your best bet as you
get a chance to pick it up well before Pool/Snapnames or the other drop
catching companies get a look in.
