For what it's worth, I found MAMP to be a bit of a pain with PEAR
libraries and etc.  If you find it to be a major pain, go with
macports (though you'll have a bit of pain getting that working
initially, I found things like pear worked better under it, and then I
also had all the unix tools I needed, too).
