good at what you do and it's in the interest of the consultant for his
client to get a good job done.
I'd keep it at that and just take this person out for a meal they'll enjoy
as a "thank you".

Subject: [BNM] finders fee recommendations
Hi there
I need to pay an associate (can't think of a better word to describe him) a
finders fee for recommending us for a web project. If we win the work it
will be on merit but also partly because he recommended us as he is highly
regarded by the client. He is a freelance policy consultant (therefore not
techie) and is very well connected so there is an opportunity for getting
further work through him in the future. We've discussed different ways to
pay him and have come up with two options:
1. A percentage
2. An amount based on his daily rate
If we go for option (1) I'm wondering how much to pay? Is 5% to little? Is
there some sort of calculation I can use to work out what is the appropriate
percentage? The margins are pretty tight so we won't make a huge amount of
money from the job. He suggested option (2) as a possibility as he has put
in an amount of work with the client (probably half a day). This work was
done before he approached us or made his recommendation, however. It seems
to me that option (2) is a bit arbitrary as he might recommend us for
another job that has required much more time from him and therefore makes it
unfeasible for us or vice versa, he just provides a recommendation and then
doesn't make anything from it.
We can't really do any kind of skill swap or for us to provide
recommendations for him as his area of work is quite niche and there
wouldn't be many opportunities for us to promote him.
I'd like to agree one option for all future jobs (should there be any) as
this makes it clearer all round and doesn't mean we have to negotiate each
time. Does anyone have any experience of working out finders fees or any
ideas of how I should approach this?
