e-mail Ning and ask for your files to be available and they take yours
out of the main system so you can have FTP access. This means you don't
get new functionality as soon as they roll it out as you'll have to
patch your files, but it also means you can integrate in new code.
It's not too tricky to work with, the core code is all Object Oriented
PHP. Some of the documentation is OK, but I found it to be either very
high level, or rather low level, with not a lot inbetween. Also it's
spread across 2-3 different sites, which isn't helpful.
There are two networks which are helpful if you're doing hacking -
networkcreators.com and developers.ning.com
Creating custom pages isn't too bad, and creating boxes on the page
which then call services from other (i.e. your) web servers is
emminently possible too.
