[BNM] [OT] Advice needed: my hard drive turned up on Ebay

I had a similar situation where I dropped a laptop, didn't boot up  
etc... called to find out if I was covered on my insurance and was  
told the same as you, yeah you'll need to send it to us and we'll  
delete the data etc...
because I had too much confidential information on the drive at the  
time I took the laptop to a friend who fortunately was able to bring  
it back to life

but your story is seriously hideous,
get as much evidence that the drive was the one from your laptop  
(would you have receipts with serial numbers?)
get a copy of the insurance policy in regard to destroying the data on  
the drive
if possible get the drive back I guess
and then take them / the validators to court!
