Well I wouldn’t say cancel each other, a reciprocal link has value but less
potency than a one-way link.
Yes you can mark one rel=nofollow to make it a one-way link, then have site
A link to site D, site B link to site C etc. but I wouldn’t bother.
Personally I think Google is looking at the WHOIS/domain data to determine
networks anyway now, especially on gTLDs (COM/INFO/ORG). There is nothing
wrong these days with having a ‘network’ of sites so you’re better being
open about it in case you get a manual review*
*unless of course you have 1000+ sites in it and you’re doing a lot of poker
