Or... If you're on multiple platforms (XP and Vista and *nix) or use
different clients for different purposes (or love social media services)
you might think about using plaxo <https://www.plaxo.com/> instead.

Have given up on ActiveSync/MDCentre almost completely as it wasn't
"automatically starting" at all.

Just plug the device into a usb port. Windows mobile Device Center will
automatically start and take you through partnering your device with
Outlook/Exchange.
