in leaving them as they are
Hi Gillian,
Advantages:
1) You can sell (flip) them as properties in their own right later down
the road
2) Each blog has a clearer identity and user group, you avoid brand
confusion
Disadvantages
3) You can get issues with domain targeted Adsense
- If advertisers choose to target your domain specifically then
their adverts may start showing up on your subdomain sites as well. Then you
can get inappropriate ads = lower CTR and income
4) There was recently a change to stop more than 2 results from a single
domain showing up for any one search term. This can still happen but you
would require a lot more Google juice. So this means for any particular
search you could only get two of your sites (main domain + subdomain)
showing up. Not a big problem, as you said these sites are all on different
themes but maybe useful information for you if you are looking to dominate
some SE niche searches.
As Kelvin says, Google has started to treat sub-domains as individual
entities, not connected with the main domain. This is to prevent people
using the trust in their main domain to launch lots of spammy sub-domains
with instantly high rankings. So you won’t get any significant linking
advantage anymore in your current setup.
Moving them all to separate C-class hosts and linking them together would be
more useful in building link equity but Google is getting cleverer at
working out which sites are in your network and downgrading the link values
between them.
Does that help? :-)
