[BNM] Problem with PC freezing

I've got a PC that I built from scratch about 18 months ago, running
Windows XP.  It has an irritating problem where it occasionally
freezes up completely. No blue screen, just locks up in whatever state
it was in. There are no errors in Event Viewer, nothing turns up if I
run a memory checker, I've tried a different graphics card and
removing all unnecessary peripherals/PCI cards but nothing has helped.

Can anyone give me any tips for diagnosing the problem? My guess is a
hardware or driver problem, but I can't really afford to replace the
components one at a time to test it and I can't find any error
messages to narrow it down!
