[BNM] [OT] Can anybody recommend a surveyor?

We used an excellent surveyor, but I'm afraid I've destroyed the
paperwork. He persuaded us not to buy the house, so there didn't seem
any point in keeping it. Hopefully, however, it might be helpful for
me to point out that we chose him because he was prepared to discuss
the survey results on the 'phone, and he was also happy for us to
attend during the visit. Many surveyors are rather secretive and
refuse to discuss their findings subsequently, which is extremely
frustrating when you've just shelled out the best part of £1,000. It
also takes a long time for the report to come through, so there is a
considerable benefit to being able to get an idea of the verdict early
on, in case it affects your decision to proceed with the purchase.

One note of caution - when I was selling my last house, the buyers'
surveyor told them they shouldn't buy it, as it was "falling down".
It transpired he had similarly condemned two previous houses they were
buying, as he wanted them to keep using his services. Mind you, he
very generously gave them a £5 discount on the second survey. My
buyers then had to pay for a second opinon which, thankfully,
concluded that the house was fine.

Yep, house buying is simply a conspiracy to relieve you of your
hard-earned cash.

Hope it all goes well
