[BNM] session_start causing PHP to hang

Hi,

For the past few weeks we've been tearing our hair out trying to figure out
why our PHP web application hangs randomly.  When i say hang, basically it
stops responding (this is on linux, i cant see whats going on with the
apache/php process), no errors get spat out, the page just sits there
loading and eventually a window asks if we would like to download index.php.
 The only way to get it to start working again was to clear our session
cookies (which annoyingly logged us out of the system).

Anyway ive tracked the problem down to the session_start() function which is
called near the start of the application.  Has anyone ever heard reports of
thise happening? Ive read through the PHP manual entry and user comments and
had a google and i cant find anyone else with this problem.
