[BNM] Mounting drives in OS X

I'm just looking into Mac OS X automounting for external drives (archive
volumes) and was wondering if anyone knows a good way to set all drives to
be read only. I guess that there is something controlling automount in the
Finder (as you can choose not to automount, apart from anything else) and
that this might be configurable?
