I'd probably recommend the guitar shop on St
James' St. They've got lots of very expensive
instruments but a good friend of mine also
bought a sub-£100 acoustic for his neice
there recently. If they're just starting out,
there's always a temptation to try a nylon
strung guitar because they're easier on the
fingers. I'd think twice, depending on the
sort of music they're interested in and the
sort of stuff they're likely to want to play.
Nylon guitar necks tend to be wider than
steel strung ones as well. Most of the big
manufacturers do a 3/4 size guitar.
Alternatively, there are quite a few
inexpensive 'travel guitars' that might fit
the bill. The shop in St James' seems less
well travelled than GAK.
They're here -
