I'm not sure it's better but I use it and am used to
it now, Mulberry:

A number of HE institutions opted for this over a more
!erm! popular/expected choice. Available for osx, pc
and linux. Preferences (i.e. colours/fonts and more)
can be stored on a remote server. It's a bit clunky
and it's disconnected mode can be a pain to set-up.
Our choice of mail clients has gone from pine (still
used) ECS mail, SirenMail and Mulberry. Most of the
companies have gone bust; we're a bit like Blade
Runner.
