[BNM] Why does stuff look so bad?

In the same vain as "Why haven't I got the hover shoes I was promised in 
the 70s" discussions, how is it that technology has been so badly served 
by industrial/product design? My (incomplete) list of stuff that is 
functionally amazing (or is at least a realisation of what the future 
promised) but looks TERRIBLE:

Dect/cordless phones
Video door entry systems - especially at the handset end
Freeview boxes
Most DAB radios

Erm.....

Actually, I'm mostly p*ssed about the video entry systems.
