[BNM] Locked out of my MacBook pro

Thanks for that, the boot device was mounted as read only but once I got
past that it appears my username must have been typed wrong as the short
name "simonatkinson" comes back unknown.
On normal boot it say "Simon Atkinson's mac) I guess that’s not linked to
the short name though, any more pointers if I cant guess how I spelt the
username.
Feel like a right idiot.

If you're running leopard
reboot the laptop
hold the "command" key(the key to the left of the space bar) & "S" key
down on your keyboard to force your system to startup in single user
mode, once the screen turns black & text goes scrolling pass you can let go.
once at the prompt do
passwd yourshortname
(short name is the lower case version of your username with spaces.)
set your password & type exit
if the laptop is running tiger, you can reset the password using the
nicl utility.
