I don't understand, FTP is widely used and the best known file transfer
protocol in the world so we all know it must be OK (or security, use SFTP
instead). What do you use instead and why David?

As for upgrading the existing server, you're asking for trouble by

Best practice is to back-up on the local server _before_ the upgrade so that
a restore is your fallback. It will take seconds!
