Hi Wayne,

i was about to suggest similar. There's a free VMware
player and I've also seen prebuilt Ubuntu (and others)
images that you can download and run.

Vmware was really useful for me to try and get
dual-booting my PC right. Installed XP and then ubuntu
 and then fiddled with boot stuff until it worked. Not
sure if you can do that in the free player as I got
the workstation version.
