[BNM] DNS help

Can anyone shed any light on our problem?

We use 123reg to manage the DNS for lots of our domain names

This usually means a couple of A records, WWW and MAIL with IP addresses 
in and an MX record with a canonical name of the mail server

Although, in general, everything has been working fine for years, we 
have recently been experiencing delays in sending emails - that Zen have 
told us is due to the a very slow response from the 123reg DNS servers.

We understood that, although we used 123reg to manage DNS, we were not 
dependant on the performance of their DNS servers, because of the nature 
  of the way DNS propogates around the internet

Confused now...
