[BNM] How to get at Flash variables that are in a swf within a swf

Using Lingo, I need to get at some variables that are in a swf that is 
displayed within another 'top level' swf within a Director movie. I have 
initialised the top level flash sprite using "_level0", but I'm thinking 
that this could be what is stopping me from accessing the variables in 
the swf that is being displayed within the initialised top level swf.

Any ideas? Even as to what I'm blithering on about?
