I've inherited a site that uses Smarty, php and pear-quickforms. I quite
like the Smarty side of things. I'm not sure it's proper MVC like I'm
starting to read about in Ruby and Java/JSF but still nice. I've had to do
a few changes to the layout and it was nice not to worry about php and just
fiddle with the HTML looking stuff.

Smarty looks a bit like coldfusion or jsp to me with my limited experience
i.e. HTML with code sprinkled in. It doesn't look like PHP I suppose.

I guess the point is you could separate the work between a PHPer and an
HTMLer if you wanted to. You would with me cos I've got no aesthetic
inclinations what-so-ever.

I like quickforms though -makes both server and client side validation a
bit more framework-y
