Thanks all sorted now. Not sure why but a later power-cycle fixed all the 
problems. I ended up pulling out cables for no reason.

Sky have been in touch but I turned them down, in the end. I'm going to 
give it a bit of time and if things don't improve, or get worse, then we'll 
probably swap to sky. My wife doesn't want a dish outside the house (the 
snob).

Touch wood; I've never had a big problem with NTL broadband, if that starts 
playing up then we'll probably switch sooner.

Skyone wasn't such a big loss to my life after all although I do miss 
saturday afternoons of star trek.
