There are plenty of sites (e.g. Fileplanet) where you can download
demos for games old and new. A bit old, but I got a huge amount of
mileage from the demos for Unreal Tournament and Age of Empires 2 back
in my living-off-pasta Uni days. :)
There are also plenty of few-years-old PC games to be had for £5 or so
that hold up pretty well. You can get hours and hours out of real-time
strategies like Age of Empires, Command & Conquer and the like, if you
think your son would go for that sort of thing.
Stick Cricket is an awesome Flash game (or was, at least -- I haven't
played in a little while), even if you're not a big cricket fan.
Wasted many a lunchtime on that one...
