As to the current symbols, it's just a character encoding issue (the way the
actual symbols are represented in bytes). The reason you're seeing odd
glyphs is because the default character set doesn't have any sane
representation for them; if you add...
<META http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8">
or similar to the HEAD section of your site's HTML template, the oddness
should go away - all it does is say "The characters on this page are encoded
via the UTF-8".
As has already been suggested, you could also just use characters that are
representable using the default encoding (ISO-8859-1).
