+1 for iMic, in and out for less than 30 notes and they sell them at Cancom.

If you ever get a quote for what this will cost to fix, I suggest comparing
that price versus using some sort of USB Audio interface instead for your
headphones - so long as you have spare USB socket on your G4?

This one: "Griffin iMic Audio Interface", is around £29 direct from Apple.
