Don't bother.  Zencart will drive you nuts, and just wait 'til you have to
install a core update.  Oh the joys!

Get Cubecart[1], it has a much better templating system.  It hasn't got all
the bells and whistles some people like but it's heading in a better
direction if you ask me.  Zencart is a total mess, Cubecart is much nicer to
work with.  If you can help it I'd avoid modifying the core functionality as
it makes updates a lot simpler.
