Since I was asking about VOIP yesterday as well (many thanks for 
everyone's input) I had a peruse of the sipgate site which elicited 
further questions.
I'm using a d-link wireless router attached to my cable modem - does 
anyone else have this type of setup?
It appears that sipgate don't recommend this configuration, to whit, 
cable modem > wireless router > VOIP phone adapter.
Also (and I did search for the answer) does one get caller ID with it?
