Hello teccie folk
Sorry for the feeble question... voip yes thats using the broadband for
your phoneline... so...
I asked an IT bloke about voip last year and he seemed to think it was only
suitable for businesses with a few staff ... whereas Im working alone. How
much better are these services than Skype (which is crackly as hell for me)?
How good a broadband connection do you need and will I sound like Im
calling from down a well in Cambodia or something?
Id normally spend up to £80 a month on BT phonecalls, plus broadband.
Presumably there are set up costs etc? I looked up the Handytone link and it
seemed to suggest its £45 ... but that sounds too good to be true.
Can anyone explain this in simple terms for me (Im a web MARKETING person
you see I dont actually understand this IT stuff, I just pretend I do).

Yan,
I use a handytone 486 [1] at home and have it connected straight to my
standard cordless phone. The setup is a bit fiddly if your VOIP provider
doesn't give you all the settings but it isn't too hard. I use it with
sipgate.co.uk and it works a treat.
Let me know if you need more info on it.

Hi Yan,
We use Netgear TA612V 's and a Sipgate account (www.sipgate.co.uk) You can
actually have 2 sipgate accounts, two phone numbers and two real phones
working through the same box as well.
Provided you either have greater than 256k upload bandwidth, OR you don't
use your connection much then this works quite well and is a darn site
cheaper - particularly for international calls than BT.
Regards,
Richard.

Isn't that a bit underpowered? Surely you need at least a pentium/133
handyphone to get decent sample rates.

Sorry.
Feeble.
The baby slept all night - I'm over-rested. At least, that's my excuse.
