I don't know, to be honest, maybe this applies to older lenses.
If you like the feel of the Nikons (and they do tend to feel more solid and
less plastic-y), didn't they have a Nikon D50 to try out - that might be a
good comprimise?
The Nikon D70/70s (which is the one I use) was criticised as producing
slightly lacklustre, underexposed images that often need a bit of sprucing
up in Photoshop.
Then the D50 came along, which I believe is more designed to give good
quality images *straight out* of the camera (i.e. brighter and with more
contrast than the D70). Like the D70 (unlike the D40), it has a top panel
LCD thing, which a lot of people find useful.
Don't know much about the D40 apart from the DPreview review, which you've
read! I would find the lack of a top-panel LCD a bit irritating -- just a
personal thing.
You're spoit for choice I guess - just 3 years ago there were only two
digital SLRs that you could get for (just) under a grand...
