The F series also has very good low light performance, it is able to
go up to 3200ASA and give an acceptable small print, the A series will
not do that. This makes the F series excellent for social photography
which is often done indoors in low light. All compact cameras have
poor flash units and photographs taken with flash never look very
good, the F series can either use no flash or balance flash and
ambient to get a decent result.

You could also look at the Canon IXUS 950 which also has face
detection, good low light performance and proper image stabilisation.
