Hmm... in my experience this isn't the case – it's just not easy to  
see 'by cheapest fare' on the main search. On the right hand side of  
the homepage is a 'Search by fare'http://ojp2.nationalrail.co.uk/en/ 
pj/fo1 link which is pretty great. In fact Nationalrail.co.uk is the  
only reliable website I've found at displaying all the trains – I've  
noticed the First Great Western and Virgin both omit certain trains  
from their listings, but then you can only by tickets online through  
these private providers (which is really frustrating – after having  
found the perfect trail on nationarail.co.uk you then have to enter  
in all the details all over again).

You're right though, it is still much easier to ask a real human  
'give me the cheapest ticket possible on this date'.
