My Dads a published author. He does lots of magazine articles and suchlike.

The "rule of thumb" (so he tells me) is 15p per word. I bet he strings out
his sentences such that, and I mean this in no disrespectful way, neither to
the reader, nor the publisher, whom I regard and an exceptional employer to
my father. Did I ever tell you about my fathers secret ambitions to be a
writer?Well it all started when he was a young man in the Army whereupon he
was once asked to recount the story of..

etc.
do I win a prize?

Ahh, this piece of string I'm holding, how long is it ;-)

This is rather like web design, you can cost it in one of two ways:

1. How many hours it takes * your hourly rate

2. How much it enhances the worth of the business you are doing it for

If you're not sure about '2' and don't have a portfolio of previous
articles which will let you convince the client that your work will be
worth a lot to their company, you're probably safest with '1'. If you
don't know how long it'll take you to write the articles, you're going
to be back at the lovely stage of estimating times and hoping you don't
go too far over them, and that's always fun.

Cheers

Paul
