Ah. The "uncanny valley". They can do a lot with animatronics and
robotics these days, but the more human they look, the greater the
sense of unease, as if something in the hindbrain recognises "other"
and refuses to sanction it as human.

I'm sure there' must be an interesting science fiction novel about
first contact and aliens who look almost, but not quite sufficiently,
human and the impact of the iota of difference. Anyone able to
recommend one?
